Current Research: Research into ways to address the risks for men who are overweight or obese has been increasing, since the increased prvalence of obesity is highly associated with metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Since carbohydrate restricted diets (CRD) have been used to reduce weight, and in turn the risks, researchers from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, looked at what part the cholesterol from eggs - which have been shuned for years, and even declared evil, because they contain cholesterol - might play in this diet. Two groups either ate 3 eggs per day, or a cholesterol-free egg substitute (SUB) every day. while the LDL did not change in either group, the HDL-C (High-Density Lipoprotein, the "Good Cholesterol") did not change in the SUB group, but HDL-C concentrations INCREASED in the EGG group. Overall, the total number of men with Metabolic Syndrome dropped from 18 to 3, with the added benefits of positive effects on plasma HDL-C concentrations for the men who ate eggs. |
| Lycopene May be Protective, not "Corrective" |
Current Research: A few years ago, lycopene made headlines. People, especially people with cancer began taking a lot of lycopene. Unfortunately, it did not seem to make a great deal of difference for them. Despite this, studies of people's diets and related diseases show that high-lycopene intakes are associated with lower risks of several cancers, including liver, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, and prostate, among others. A recent study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, helps demonstrate lycopene's role. In a Nude Mice model, researchers added lycopene to the diet of one group, and nothing to the control group. After 2 weeks, the mice were injected with hepatocarcinoma cells. The results: "lycopene supplementation markedly inhibits the growth of metastatic tumors developed in the lungs" when compared to the control group. Lycopene appears to afford protection by supporting the body's ability to inhibit tumor invasion, proliferation, and angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels supplying a tumor). While this was an animal model, not a human study, it does indicate that lycopene itself is an active part of the diet that helps to keep us healthy. The message: Eat your tomato sauce, cooked tomatoes with olive oil, etc. It helps to keep you healthy. Supplemental lycopene may also have good benefit, as suggested in this study, as part of a healthy diet and supplement program. |
| Master Cleanse Products | Master Cleanse Update: Recently I have seen new products introduced to the market that pre-mix the lemon and maple syrup, and sometimes add additional ingredients, in an attempt to make the Master Cleanse easier. Over the years, we have had people use bottled or frozen lemon juice for the "Master Cleanse"-fasting part of our 90-Day Healing Cleanse Program, and find that it is not as effective. A simple reason is that the enzymes from fresh lemon or lime juice are an integral part of the program. Fresh Lemon Enzymes during a fast work in the digestive tract to enhance cleansing. The pasturization process required for bottled juices creates stability by inactivating the natural juice enzymes. This defeats a significant part of the purpose of the Master Cleanse, as developed by Stanley Burroughs. The BCN 90-Day Healing Cleanse Program builds on the Master Cleanse by adding bentonite, psyllium (from Dr. Irons program), PC-1-2-3™ which starts the 90-day parasite cleanse, and contributes significant trace minerals, and the Nature's Pure Body Colon Program. This combination substantially reduces, or eliminates the "detox-distress" many people encounter on the Master Cleanse, while improving the program. After the Master Cleanse 8-day fast, once the colon, digestive tract and liver are prepared, we introduce the Nature's Pure Body Whole Body Program. The people who have used both approaches to fasting tell us that the BCN program is gentler, easier and more thorough. My recommendation: Stick with squeezing your own lemons. For even better results, if you like the taste, put cleaned organic lemons, skin and all, or peel most of the skin off, leaving the inner white rind intact (less bitter) into a VitaMix to make your lemon juice. -- Art Bartunek, BCN |
